The Mathura School of Art refers to a distinct style of Indian sculpture that emerged and flourished in the ancient city of Mathura, located in present-day Uttar Pradesh, primarily during the Kushana period, roughly from the 1st to the 3rd century CE.

It is considered one of the three major schools of ancient Indian sculpture, alongside the Gandhara and Amaravati Schools. What makes the Mathura School particularly significant is its thoroughly indigenous character, drawing inspiration from native Indian artistic traditions, particularly the Yaksha and Yakshi figures that predated it.

It was a major center for Jain art, creating numerous Tirthankara images, often depicted nude (Digambara tradition) with the Srivatsa mark on the chest.

Hindu deities like Vishnu, Shiva, Surya, and various Matrikas (mother goddesses) also found their early iconographic forms in Mathura. This multi-religious patronage reflects Mathura's status as a vibrant cultural and trade hub, attracting diverse communities and fostering a rich artistic environment.
