Definition

Imagine you have a complex object, like a cricket bat or a bicycle. Instead of trying to track the motion of every single tiny particle that makes up that object, wouldn't it be great if you could just focus on one special point that represents the 'average' position of all its mass? That special point is precisely what we call the 'Center of Mass' (CoM).

For a rigid body, which is an object that doesn't deform or change its shape when forces are applied, the CoM is a fixed point relative to the body itself. This means if you draw the CoM on the object, it stays in the same spot on the object, even if you toss the object in the air or spin it around. It's like the 'balance point' of the object. If you could perfectly balance the object on a pin, that pin would be directly under its center of mass.

The CoM isn't necessarily inside the physical boundaries of the object. For example, a donut's center of mass is in the hole, where there's no actual material. Similarly, for a hollow sphere, the CoM is at its geometric center, which is empty space.

Why is this concept so important in physics, especially for NEET? Because it dramatically simplifies the analysis of motion. When we talk about the translational motion of a rigid body (moving from one place to another without rotating), we can often treat the entire body as if all its mass were concentrated at its CoM.

This allows us to apply Newton's laws of motion to the CoM as if it were a single particle. For instance, when a projectile is launched, its CoM follows a perfect parabolic path, even if the object itself is tumbling or spinning.

This makes solving problems involving complex objects much more manageable and is a fundamental tool for understanding mechanics.
