UPSC Importance Analysis
IoT connects digital governance to physical services such as metering, environmental monitoring and infrastructure maintenance. Its distinctive feature is the link between a measurement or command and a real-world process. That link creates useful opportunities but also means that data-quality or security failures can have physical consequences. The relevant analysis must therefore include the device, network and operational setting.
For Prelims, distinguish sensors from actuators, edge processing from remote processing, and identification from authorisation. NIST's 2020 capability baseline provides an organised way to compare device-security functions without relying on marketing labels. A device called smart is not thereby accurate, secure or capable of receiving trustworthy updates.
For Mains, assess whether a deployment changes the intended service outcome. Calibration, connectivity, maintenance and response capacity can determine whether measurements become useful action. Include privacy and access controls when data can reveal behaviour or sensitive conditions. Avoid assuming that more devices automatically improve governance or that one communication technology suits every operating environment.
