Algae — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on Algae, a systematic approach is essential. Firstly, create a comparative table for Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Rhodophyceae, focusing on key differentiating features: primary pigments, stored food, cell wall composition, presence/absence and type of flagella, and habitat.
Memorize at least 2-3 characteristic examples for each class. For reproduction, understand the definitions and examples of isogamy, anisogamy, and oogamy. Similarly, grasp the core concept of haplontic, diplontic, and haplo-diplontic life cycles and associate them with specific algal examples (e.
g., *Spirogyra* for haplontic, *Fucus* for diplontic, *Ectocarpus* for haplo-diplontic). Pay special attention to the economic importance – know which algae yield agar, carrageenan, and algin, and their uses.
When solving MCQs, read the question carefully, especially looking for keywords like 'incorrect', 'unique', or 'match the following'. Eliminate obviously wrong options first. For conceptual questions, recall the specific features of each algal group.
For example-based questions, direct recall of examples associated with specific characteristics is key. Be wary of trap options that mix characteristics of different algal groups or introduce features of higher plants.
