Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on pteridophyte classification and examples, a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, create a clear mental map or a tabular summary of the four classes: Psilopsida, Lycopsida, Sphenopsida, and Pteropsida.

For each class, memorize 2-3 key distinguishing features (e.g., leaf type, stem structure, sporangia arrangement, spore type) and 2-3 representative examples. Pay special attention to unique features like the absence of true roots/leaves in *Psilotum*, microphylls and strobili in Lycopsida, jointed stems and whorled leaves in *Equisetum*, and megaphylls, sori, and circinate vernation in Pteropsida.

Secondly, focus on the concept of homospory vs. heterospory and memorize the specific examples of heterosporous pteridophytes (*Selaginella*, *Marsilea*, *Salvinia*, *Azolla*), as this is a frequent trap.

For numerical problems (though rare in this specific subtopic, more common in general plant kingdom questions), ensure conceptual clarity. For conceptual questions, read each option carefully, eliminating distractors based on specific class characteristics.

Practice identifying common misconceptions, such as assuming all pteridophytes are homosporous or have true roots. Regularly revise the examples and their associated features to ensure quick and accurate recall during the exam.
