Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on Nomenclature, Isomerism, and Conformation, a systematic approach is key. For Nomenclature, practice is paramount. Always start by identifying the longest continuous carbon chain, even if it's not drawn horizontally.

Then, number the chain from the end that gives the substituents the lowest possible set of numbers. If there's a tie in numbering, prioritize the substituent that comes first alphabetically. Remember prefixes like 'di-', 'tri-', 'tetra-' are ignored for alphabetization, but 'iso-' and 'neo-' are considered.

For Isomerism, learn to systematically draw all possible structural isomers for a given molecular formula, starting with the straight chain, then one branch, then two, and so on, carefully checking for duplicates.

Understand the definitions of chain, position, functional, and stereoisomers (conformational, geometric, optical) to correctly classify them. For Conformation, focus on visualizing 3D structures. Practice drawing Newman projections for ethane and butane, clearly showing staggered/eclipsed and anti/gauche forms.

Memorize the relative stability order (Anti > Gauche > Eclipsed for butane). For cyclohexane, master the chair conformation, understanding axial and equatorial positions, and the concept of ring inversion.

Crucially, remember that bulky substituents prefer the equatorial position to minimize 1,3-diaxial interactions. For MCQs, carefully read the question, eliminate obvious distractors, and apply the rules step-by-step.

Numerical problems are rare here, but conceptual clarity is heavily tested.
