To excel in redox reaction questions for NEET, a systematic approach is key. Firstly, master the rules for assigning oxidation numbers. This is the most fundamental skill; practice with various complex ions and compounds, including peroxides, superoxides, and metal hydrides, where oxygen and hydrogen show unusual oxidation states.

Secondly, clearly understand the definitions of oxidation, reduction, oxidizing agent, and reducing agent. Remember 'OIL RIG' (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain) and that the oxidizing agent gets reduced, and the reducing agent gets oxidized.

Thirdly, practice balancing redox reactions extensively. Focus on both the oxidation number method and the ion-electron method, and be proficient in balancing in both acidic and basic media. Pay close attention to balancing H and O atoms correctly, as this is a common source of error.

For multiple-choice questions, sometimes you can eliminate options by just checking the oxidation states of a few key elements or by quickly verifying charge balance. For numerical problems involving balancing, work step-by-step and recheck each stage.

Don't rush; accuracy is more important than speed initially. Finally, be able to identify different types of redox reactions, particularly disproportionation reactions, by analyzing the changes in oxidation states of the elements involved.
