To excel in NEET questions on zero and first-order reactions, a systematic approach is essential. Firstly, memorize the integrated rate laws and half-life expressions for both orders:

  • Zero-order: [A]t=[A]0kt[A]_t = [A]_0 - kt and t1/2=[A]0/2kt_{1/2} = [A]_0 / 2k.
  • First-order: ln([A]t/[A]0)=ktln([A]_t/[A]_0) = -kt (or 2.303log([A]0/[A]t)=kt2.303 \log([A]_0/[A]_t) = kt) and t1/2=0.693/kt_{1/2} = 0.693 / k.

Secondly, **understand the units of the rate constant (kk)** for each order (mol L1^{-1} s1^{-1} for zero-order, s1^{-1} for first-order) as this is a common conceptual trap. Thirdly, master graphical interpretations: know which plot yields a straight line for each order and what its slope represents.

For numerical problems, always identify the reaction order first. Then, list all 'given' values with their units and clearly state what needs to be 'found'. Choose the appropriate formula and substitute values carefully.

Pay close attention to units and ensure consistency. For percentage completion problems, remember to calculate the *remaining* concentration. For half-life problems, especially for first-order reactions, recognize that multiple half-lives simplify calculations significantly.

Avoid common mistakes like confusing lnln with loglog or misinterpreting the sign of the slope in graphs. Practice a wide variety of problems, including those involving pseudo-first-order reactions, to build confidence and speed.
