Prelims Strategy

To excel in 'Plant Growth and Development' for NEET, a multi-faceted strategy is crucial. Firstly, create detailed flashcards or summary tables for each Plant Growth Regulator (Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinins, ABA, Ethylene).

For each PGR, note its discovery, primary site of synthesis, key physiological effects (both promoting and inhibiting), and significant agricultural/horticultural applications. Pay close attention to unique characteristics, like ethylene being gaseous or ABA being the 'stress hormone'.

Secondly, master the concepts of photoperiodism and vernalization. Understand the definitions of short-day, long-day, and day-neutral plants, and memorize 2-3 classic examples for each. For vernalization, remember its purpose (preventing precocious flowering) and the plant parts that perceive the cold stimulus.

Thirdly, clearly differentiate between growth and development, and understand the three phases of growth (meristematic, elongation, maturation) and the two types of growth curves (arithmetic and geometric).

Practice interpreting sigmoid curves. Finally, be prepared for application-based questions that require you to link a specific plant response or agricultural practice to the correct PGR or environmental factor.

Avoid rote memorization without understanding the underlying mechanisms; conceptual clarity will help you tackle tricky questions and avoid common traps, such as confusing the roles of ABA and ethylene in senescence or dormancy.
