Environmental Issues — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in the Environmental Issues chapter for NEET Prelims, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, focus on clear conceptual understanding. Differentiate between similar-sounding terms like global warming and climate change, or primary and secondary pollutants.
Understand the 'why' and 'how' behind phenomena like eutrophication and biomagnification, rather than just memorizing definitions. Secondly, prioritize factual recall. Create tables or flashcards for different types of pollution, listing their specific causes, major pollutants involved, their effects on humans and the environment, and the corresponding control measures.
For instance, know that and cause acid rain, and CFCs deplete the ozone layer. Thirdly, pay close attention to numerical values or specific examples mentioned in NCERT, such as the permissible limits for particulate matter or the BOD values for clean vs.
polluted water. While direct numerical calculations are rare, these values might appear in conceptual questions. Fourthly, memorize important environmental acts, movements (e.g., Chipko Movement, Joint Forest Management), and international protocols (e.
g., Montreal Protocol for ozone, Kyoto Protocol for climate change). Finally, practice a wide variety of MCQs, including assertion-reason type questions, to get accustomed to the question patterns and identify common trap options.
For conceptual questions, break down the options and eliminate incorrect ones based on your fundamental understanding.
