In chemistry, compounds are like these cakes, made up of different 'ingredients' – which are elements. Percentage composition is simply a way to express how much of each element is present in a compound, but specifically, it's expressed as a percentage by mass.
Let's break it down: When we say 'percentage composition of an element in a compound,' we mean the mass of that particular element divided by the total mass of the compound, multiplied by 100. It tells us the exact proportion of each constituent element within a given chemical compound.
For example, if you have a compound like water (), it's made of hydrogen and oxygen. To find its percentage composition, we'd figure out the total mass of hydrogen in one molecule (or one mole) of water, and the total mass of oxygen in one molecule (or one mole) of water.
