Percentage composition quantifies the mass contribution of each element in a chemical compound, expressed as a percentage of the compound's total mass. It is a direct consequence of the Law of Definite Proportions, which states that a pure compound always has the same elemental proportions by mass, irrespective of its origin.

To calculate it, you divide the total mass of an element in one mole of the compound by the compound's molar mass and multiply by 100. This concept is vital for characterizing substances, ensuring product quality in industries, and crucially, for determining the empirical and molecular formulas of unknown compounds.

For instance, if a compound is 40% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen, and 53.3% oxygen by mass, this data can be used to deduce its empirical formula. Understanding percentage composition is fundamental for mastering stoichiometry and other quantitative aspects of chemistry relevant for NEET.
