For NEET prelims, mastering percentage composition requires a systematic approach. Firstly, ensure you are proficient in calculating molar masses accurately, as this is the most common source of error.
Always use the atomic masses provided in the question or standard values (e.g., H=1, C=12, O=16). Secondly, practice direct percentage composition calculations for various compounds, including hydrated salts where water of crystallization needs to be accounted for.
Thirdly, and most importantly, become adept at the reverse process: determining empirical and molecular formulas from given percentage composition data. This involves converting mass percentages to moles, finding the simplest mole ratio, and then using molar mass to find the molecular formula.
Pay close attention to rounding off during intermediate steps; it's often best to carry more decimal places and round only at the final answer. For conceptual questions, recall the Law of Definite Proportions and its implications.
Always double-check your calculations, especially when dealing with multiple elements, and ensure the sum of percentages is close to 100%.
